As destination wedding planners, we’re big fans of full-weekend wedding experiences. Our couples come to us having lived all over the country (and the world), and often have guest lists that reflect that experience. Friends from childhood, classmates from B-school, and next-door neighbors from their first apartment complex are traveling to celebrate, so why not treat them to extended festivities? For the clients who want a bit more freedom than what a traditional large resort allows, we keep a short list of locations that offer open spaces and versatility for destination wedding weekends. The Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is one of those gems.

A Hidden Gem for Discerning Couples

Graylyn Estate is not just a venue; it's a portal to a 1920s-era elegance and sophistication. This 55-acre fairytale of a property offers an unparalleled setting for couples who want to create a magical weekend for their guests.

Immersive Guest Experience

For clients who prioritize their guests’ comfort and enjoyment, Graylyn is a dream come true. The estate boasts 85 uniquely decorated guest rooms and suites spread across various charming buildings, allowing your loved ones to feel like they're part of an exclusive getaway. There are few experiences more luxurious than taking over a property for a weekend of celebration.

The Manor House is the heart of the estate, where each room tells a story of the globe-trotting Gray family. From the Persian Card Room to the whimsical Atlantis Room, your guests will have plenty to explore between events and celebrations.

For a European countryside feel, look to The Mews, Cottages, and Bungalows. These smaller-scale accommodations spread across the property offer a blend of historic charm and modern comforts that your friends and family will love.

A Low-Key Wedding Weekend

When planning a full-weekend wedding experience at Graylyn, the possibilities are endless. Here’s how we’d celebrate:

Friday at The Mews

North Carolina or the English countryside? Guests would feel immediately transported enjoying cocktails and dinner in the courtyard of The Mews. We’d gather everyone around the fountain for easy chit chat, and then transition guests to a seated dinner as the sun sets.

Saturday on The Manor Grounds

Before the main event, encourage guests to explore on Graylyn’s complimentary bicycles, walk the paths woven through the grounds, enjoy a few games of tennis, or even head across the street to leisurely explore Reynolda House & Gardens.

We’d host the wedding ceremony in the idyllic White Garden, with the couple making a dramatic entrance from the rear staircase. Guests would move to the rear terrace for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by the true party in a sailcloth tent on the sprawling rear lawn. And for a late night surprise: late night snacks and a DJ set in the unforgettable Atlantis Room, which was once an indoor pool.

Sunday by the Pool

We’re advocates for no-energy-required activities after a lively wedding celebration that continues late into the night. Let’s bring farewell brunch to the pool for a chill afternoon before saying goodbye.
